What if when he died, he lost the boost? And this isn't exactly related, but what if those things combined caused his change in personality?

Gohan was Ultimate in Wrath of the Dragon and Battle of Gods, so he kept it through death and revival.
There's just no actual in-universe explanation. He simply got Toei nerfed in the DBS multiverse (NOT putting it in the same story as DBZ).

I don't know about nerfed since his power was used as an excuse for Goku and Vegeta to get to. That's more than I can say he did in ROF where he needed to use SSJ for a Zarbon tier opponent.

He looked the same after being revived during the Majin Boo fight, so I don't feel it necessary to deny him the same power.

What if when he died, he lost the boost? And this isn't exactly related, but what if those things combined caused his change in personality? Where is this boost came from? I mean it is evident that elder kai's ritual did the same to Gohan as the Guru's unlock did. It made him stronger, and it was set, it can not be lost, just his power could decrease if he drop the training.
Post unlock gohan is not a form, stop using Xenoverse as a golden rule.

No theory only TOEI asspulls
Not tryin to be wannabe-Anime Jesus or anything, but its a drawing.
No matter how you slice it, its a drawing & you're here deriving theories on why a drawing got weaker
Okay, cool.
But here's da thing
The guy was Ultimate Mystic in Wrath of Dragon, BOG & even Fusion Reborn I think
Super merely used his weaker aspect to "develop" him
Lets face it. Gohan has never received proper character growth post CG.
If anything, his character suffered character assasination. Brutally at that

oh for heavens sake, as much as i love Gohan and his badass moments. Think about it. Has anyone EVER liked him for who his character is? a total pacifist who only had any interest in fighting when Never. No. Everyone only liked him when he was literally feeling his worst because he looked badass.
NO ONE LIKED GOHAN UNTIL HE WENT SUPER SAIYAN 2 IN THE CELL GAMES. He was never a fan favorite. So people liked him only ONE TIME then suddenly they say his character was butchered. lol wat I'd love to see him put on Piccolos Gi again, and start wreckin. But.. it is never happening.

Still no excuse to severely nerf him to the ground just because he surpassed Goku and Vegeta. He may be a pacifist but he should still be powerful. Hard to start a fight with, but when he does he quickly ends it.

You make it seem like you think any Gohan from any time period would be able to last against Freeza. 1st form Freeza might as well be Vegetto

My favorite character of all time is a no brainer. Why is Son Gohan my favorite character? Well, I relate to him a lot. Back when I was younger I cried a lot, over being ecstatic, being sad, being really, really angry... And when Gohan was first shown he was exactly like me. Scared of every little thing nearly, extremely shy and clingy to his parents, and not brave. I connected with him instantly. My eyes were glued to the screen whenever he was on. People thought his crying was annoying? I was annoying with my crying too. No one really wants to hear someone cry... But that's just something he and I shared. I rooted for him since the beginning and heck, I even got made fun of for liking him because he was "lame"! No need to get off topic though. As time went on, Gohan became more of a fighter. Time turned him into a somewhat brave kid who would only fight if he had to... But he was still who he was at the core before. He was compassionate, loved his family and friends dearly and would protect them through anything and still a huge nerd (smart)... I admired that. It showed me that I could become that, too! I was always picked on for anything they could get at. After watching Gohan grow up, I knew I could become as strong as him. Gentle and compassionate, yet strong and defensive. So I began to change. Just like Gohan, slowly I changed into a stronger person who could also stand up for her friends when she had to and I became a lot more happy because of that. I was a better person overall after that. I had never had a bad temper, nor did Gohan. Though we both had our limits and broke at some point I'd still like to think I was a better person than I was before. I still teared up when I was very sad or super happy, again, Gohan was shown to do that in the anime at the Cell arc and I'm sure any person is like that. The similarities don't end there. Once he was grown up there was some pressure for him to continue training. He was a big dork that was far more clumsy and nerdy, while also very intelligent. When I was a younger girl I didn't appreciate him and often pretended the Buu saga never happened because it "ruined something that was perfect before" was how I put it. As time went on though, I began to understand him. I was pressured to move on to an animating career, something I did not want but rather my family wanted it. Despite that I went with my passion and have begun to work towards a career in computer technology. Gohan did the same with what he decided to do, rather than fighting he moved on to his dream from his childhood... And I was happy to see that he was happy. Look at him now! He has a loving wife and child. When I was younger I wanted nothing to do with a romantic relationship or children, but like most people I seem to be growing out of it... So maybe there'll be even more similarities throughout my life with Gohan, who knows for sure... What I do know for sure is that I love him dearly as he's done a lot by inspiring me, so hopefully this makes people understand why I like a character whom gets a lot of dislike in the end.
At this point I just want Super to give him some respect as a a character in general, nothing about his power level even. But no, instead they have attempt to show him in as pathetic a light as possible so they we can like puffy nipples more.
The problem isn't that he's not the strongest, the problem is this is he image they want to show of Gohan.
Not even Yamcha and Krillin had it this bad. Doesn't help that he's easily the best character in Super by far, and the show does nothing about s*** on him.
f*** dbs so much, GT is the only true sequel.

His appearance didn't change post-ritual, so I don't think this theory will work, at least for him.
He just loses power from not training. He achieved power throughout the series quite easily. I don't see the problem in the "power simply falling back off him."

GT told an original story. It has an original form. It had better villains. There is not a single thing DBS has done better than GT. GT didn't reduce Gohan, or Vegeta to what we see in Super. Heck, Goku is even likable in GT! Can't say that for Super.
